Movie to reconsider ::: Buck and the preacher(1972)

First let me admit that I have never seen let alone heard of this movie before in my life. That reason alone is why I need to stop life and let you in on something that I just stumbled on. Buck and the preacher, has the feel of a western, with the soul of a movement.

 As I write this I am watching this movie and as always I am jacked in, which explains why you are getting this live and direct(something like that.)

Instead of giving you the live play by play. I Want to get into the real life aspect of producing such a film in the early seventies. Here you have Harry Belafonte slinging guns, behind thumping a Bible. It gets no better than that. However this is 1972 and African American were making their way into the film world with works of their own, but substance was as it is today an issue. Resons being studios were not backing them as they should have been.

So stumbling onto this film from an era like the 70's, which was bombarded with blaxploitation films
and week plots was an amazing moment in time. I was under the impression that nothing else existed in the decade but tits, ass, gangsters and guns slinging, now don't forget the bad dialogue.

As this film progress, I have a new found respect for the western and Sidney Poitier. Ruby Dee grabs my heart with her lines. With the taste of slavery still on their tounges, for instance" I want to have a child with you buck, but it aint going to be here, If they wont have us in Canada, I Will go the the edge of the water." It gets no better than that. Might I add that she ripped the scene with the heart of Oscar.

Without dragging this on for miles as you know I can. I want you to go out and get you hands on this film. Add it to the collection, rent, or borrow, I do not care any which way, as long as you go out to see this film.

Homage to Blaxploitaton with a bad taste in my mouth ::: Bill Cosby went uptown on this one

There was a time when Bill Cosby was the king of comedy. With a no holds bard approach to getting the job done. Even in that realm he was able to shed light on an era with out it being exploiting in nature. He added to a genre something that was missing.

There are not enough words to describe the first time I took part in watching this film. Being that I grew up in the Cosby show era, I saw him as the father with rules and no edge. Uptown Saturday night changed that for me and showed me that he was capable of range in his character portrayals. So I dubbed this one an instant classic in the Cosby Library.

This fill also stars and is directed by Sidney Poitier, along with Harry Belefonte, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, and Calvin Lockhart. These actors were the breaking mold on the trend of Blaxploitation, although the era lasted a little longer. However with their accolades in acting and performance, it was considered a grade above by the audience. However its theme of Black Gangsters and challentens played heavy in this film, it will be forever remembered as the film cosby was more of a human being and less of the perfect father.

Movie to reconsider ::: White Mans Burden

Thirteen years ago I was off in La La land, but a little know film breached my world of Sci-Fi Fantasy films and dropped a hypothetical atom bomb on my conscious mind. That film went by the name White mans Burden, starring John Travolta, and Harry Belafonte, and a great supporting cast. However I did not come to talk about the film and the year that it graced the silver screen. What I want to talk about is the impact that it almost had and why it did not have that and should regain over the next few years if Americans, want to face the race issues facing our country.

With a film like this set in an alternate America, it gave America, the chance to look at itself from the inside out. Taking apart the bigotry that plagues this country. Speaking on race, it shows that it does not matter the year or the time that it existed, what matters is that it exist and someone needs to put a stop to it, and the the racial malfunction. This film made that attempt to do so. However it was ahead of its time, and ahead of the questions that many Americans now desire the answers to.

I myself have seen a new American World, and society, however it is stifled by a past of pain and hatred, that is a boiling pot of hot water awaiting a volcanic spill on to the burning earth of racial malice. So what do we do in order to put a stop to it? I do not know the absolute answer to that question and if I did I would not offer it up that easy. What is important is that we take the time out to look for the solution and come up with ideas to break the wall in the racial cold war. Because there is a wall and the war is cold.

With White Mans Burden, I think it would be a silent step, but a crucial lesson for Americans to undertake in their own homes. This is an opportunity for them to learn the man in the mirror, but have a conversation with that man/woman, this time around. I am not one to push race into the face of the world, I am once to remind that we are all in it together and the sooner that we learn this the better our society will become.

As far as the film goes I am sure that we can take the time out to acknowledge great film making at some of its finest. Although this film is not about angles and the tech loving CGI, or the stars themselves, it bring that element so that you can enjoy this lesson as you would from your favorite professor.

Reality is the best university, however you have to be awake to learn. If you sleep walk through it, you will be left behind, or caught in a world wind of insult and grave lack. Every test you are thrown you will fail and have to take the lesson all over again and that pain in that is that time waits for no one. So stay on top of what it right in life and you will be able to make the world a better place.
